The objects were photographed at Broughton House, the National Trust for Scotland house in my home town of Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway. I can imagine the pigeons cooing away in this scene in the same way that they do in my garden, always clowning around and easily photographed.

Before the now widespread use of washing machines, on laundry day water would be boiled in the early morning in the copper over a wood or coal fire. The washtub would be filled with the hot water and the contents agitated using a posser, or they could be lifted out with the tongues to be rubbed gently (or otherwise) on the washboards boards to remove dirt and stains. Doing this early would leave the rest of the day for them to be pegged on the line.
