This warmly observed painting portrays a Belted Galloway cow and her calf standing close together, their distinctive white belts vivid against rich dark coats and a warm green ground. One of Scotland’s most recognisable native breeds, the Belted Galloway (known affectionately as “Belties”) is hardy enough to thrive on rough upland grazing and long associated with the hills of Galloway in south-west Scotland.
