This tranquil work depicts a European Otter (Lutra lutra) at rest on a partially submerged rocky outcrop, its sleek dark form reflected in the still, light-flecked water below. Once critically endangered in the UK due to habitat loss and pesticide use, the otter has made a remarkable recovery and can now be found along clean rivers, lakes and coastlines throughout the British Isles. The title Bright Water is a nod to Gavin Maxwell’s celebrated 1960 memoir Ring of Bright Water, one of the most beloved works of British nature writing which brought the otter to the hearts of a generation.
