After a mud bath

This original pastel painting captures an African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) cow and calf in intimate close-up, their great wrinkled hides still warm with the ochre dust of a recent mud bath. The calf nestles against its mother, dwarfed by her bulk, as she bends her head protectively towards it. Elephant society is matriarchal and deeply familial — calves are raised within a close-knit herd of related females, and the bond between mother and young is one of the most powerful in the animal kingdom. The painting's extraordinary detail — every fold and crease of skin rendered with patience and skill — makes this a truly monumental work.
