Collection: Bright Water

This original pastel painting depicts a European Otter (Lutra lutra) at rest on a partially submerged rocky outcrop, its sleek, dark form reflected in the still water below. One of Britain's most elusive and cherished mammals, the otter was once critically endangered in the UK due to habitat loss and pesticide use, but has made a remarkable recovery in recent decades and can now be found along clean rivers, lakes and coastlines throughout the British Isles. The painting captures the animal in a rare moment of stillness, surrounded by the dappled, light-flecked surface of a river or estuary. The title Bright Water is a nod to Gavin Maxwell's celebrated 1960 memoir Ring of Bright Water, which brought the otter to the hearts of a generation and remains one of the most beloved works of British nature writing. Painted in soft pastels, this work conveys both the tranquillity of the otter's habitat and the quiet charisma of this fascinating and once-threatened species.
