This original pastel painting depicts a male lion (Panthera leo) at rest, his great mane fanning out around him as he fixes the viewer with a steady, unhurried gaze. Worked entirely in soft whites, greys and pale tones, the painting has an almost ethereal quality — the lion emerging from the pale ground as if from mist. Despite the restraint of the palette, the power and presence of the animal is unmistakable. Lions are now classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, their range across sub-Saharan Africa having declined significantly due to habitat loss and human conflict.
