This original pastel painting features a male Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), a species originally native to Asia that was introduced to Britain by the Romans and is now one of the most widespread game birds in the UK. The cock bird is shown in full breeding plumage — characterised by his distinctive iridescent green head, vivid red facial wattles, white neck ring, and richly patterned chestnut and gold body feathers. His long, barred tail, which can reach up to 50cm in length, is a key identifying feature of the species. Painted in soft pastels on a warm-toned background, this work captures the remarkable colour and detail of a bird that, despite its familiarity, is often underappreciated as a subject of natural beauty.

At the heart of nature
I am entirely self-taught. Whenever possible I draw from my own photographs. My aim is to create expressive art works that convey the beauty and emotion of nature in all its diversity.
