Collection: Elephant cow and calf

This original pastel painting draws the viewer into an almost abstract world of wrinkled grey skin and intertwining trunks, as an African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) cow and her calf press close together. The work focuses on texture and geometry — the extraordinary landscape of an elephant's hide, rendered in cool blue-greys and warm ochres with remarkable precision. The calf's small eye peers out from beneath its mother's trunk, watchful and trusting. It is a painting about closeness, shelter and the quiet language of touch that passes between these most intelligent and emotionally complex of animals.

At the heart of nature

I am entirely self-taught. Whenever possible I draw from my own photographs. My aim is to create expressive art works that convey the beauty and emotion of nature in all its diversity.
